A resurgent the Russian player won his first title for over two years with victory over Corentin Moutet in the tournament final.
The Russian, a ex- number one, has experienced a challenging year, winning just one match at the Grand Slams and suffering a meltdown at the American major.
His unpredictability on the tennis tour - and issues with his service game in particular - resulted in him falling of the world's top 10 and eventually separating with former trainer Gilles Cervara.
Now training with Johansson and Goetzke, he has steadily progressed in the recent weeks - peaking in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over challenger Moutet.
It is the player's initial trophy after the Rome competition and first on a hardcourt from March of that year.
Victory also means the Russian has secured 21 championships at 21 various events.

"This championship is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the maiden victory I achieved when my first daughter her name was born was for her."

His retrieving strategy and regular emotional displays on the playing surface had prompted commentators to doubt if his skill to play at the top level was concluded.
However the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the last few weeks, attempting to come to the net and perform positively, reinforced by an better service.
The champion came back from a break down in the initial set against the tricky opponent, winning four of the final five exchanges to take the lead.
The competitors traded service breaks in the middle set before the Frenchman, bidding for his initial professional title, gained dominance to force a final set.
Moutet rescued four early-game chances in a competitive final set before the champion secured a break to that score to serve for the match.
Suitably, the winner earned the win with a point at the net area, with Moutet unable to manage a shot after over two and a half hours.
